In the course of the last year the Missionary Centre for children, who otherwise would be searching for leisure activities in the streets, opened daily and was, depending on the season of the year, also more or less visited. The parents of whom the majority can not take such an intense care of their children as they would wish to appreciate that their children visit the Centre. A major part of the parents is employed and they welcome the opportunity for their children to play under supervision. In the summer, the Missionary Centre was visited by children who stayed in the housing estate and had no possibility to leave Prague. For these children the Centre organised games and trips. Also scouting teams had their own summer program.
The autumn brought us not only new visitor, but also new worries. During the summer, the Centre was twice broken into. The result of the first break-in was only one smashed window. As a consequence of the second break-in the Centre completely lost its modest electronic equipment. This damage could had been remedied by a donation by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.
As already in the past, the staff remains a constant issue. Young teachers have their children, leave for maternity leaves and are not available for work for several years. The manager does not have sufficient contacts to the new pedagogical staff. The psychological help for the parents and school-children is provided by volunteers. Also the Servo employees assist with afternoon games and events. This situation kept causing us concerns.
What we are happy about is that more and more children from gypsy families came to visit the Missionary Centre and were well accepted.
In our last year's autumn report we informed about the growing drugs abuse problem. This topic is still an issue and it is problematic to find pedagogic staff with understanding and knowledge in this area. This issue remains a priority for the Servo organisation.
Within the scope of the Missionary Centre the Servo organisation sees its task in the preservation of the existence of the Home and taking care of the children. We used the funds to pay for the electricity bills, repairs and wages of our staff.
The last mentioned area is our most challenging task, with which we will definitely cope also during next year.
There has not been a year, in which I would not cordially say thank you to our generous donors for all their support. Without your help we would be forced to terminate the project and some of the children spending their leisure time in the streets would undoubtedly become the victims of the street drug dealers. Please keep providing us with your help so that we can protect our children from the dangers of the streets by giving them in our mutual home, the Barrandov housing estate, a place to stay and a space for playing and sports.
